Women Increasingly Are Cannabis Entrepreneurs and Customers

As legalization gains momentum more women are using marijuana and more are entering the cannabis industry.

Marijuana, for the most part, is characterized as a guy thing.

Movies certainly bolster that stereotype. When it comes to iconic images of people who use marijuana, it’s mostly a Boy’s Club. The two Jeffs – Spicoli and Lebowski. Those guys in “Pineapple Express.” And, of course, Cheech and Chong.

But the number of female cannabis users is growing, according to research from the California marijuana delivery company, Eaze. And the number of female entrepreneurs in marijuana continues to grow, as well.

At the heart of investors' excitement is a surge in legal sales and a change in the public's opinion toward weed.

Edibles are gobbling up California's marijuana market

Adding cannabis to everything from iced coffee to breath mints, startups are jockeying for a bite of California’s growing marijuana edibles market as the state gears up to allow recreational pot sales.

The industry that barely existed 10 years ago — apart from a few bakers making pot brownies in their home kitchens — now shows no sign of slowing down.

“There’s a brand boom going on right now, particularly in preparation for adult use legalization here,” said Troy Dayton, CEO of The Arcview Group, a research and investment services firm focusing on marijuana businesses. “Not all of them are going to do well, but there’s just so many different types of edibles hitting different market segments.”

State-of-the-Art Cannabis Facilities Replacing Abandoned Greenhouses

Salinas, California, the largest city in Monterey County, is known across the world as the “Salad Bowl of America.” A cultivation powerhouse for lettuce, spinach, broccoli, and tomatoes, this fertile valley grows the majority of salad greens for the country. With economic pressures inspiring change, some farmers in Salinas Valley are considering a diversification of their greens.

Salinas Valley is one of the most agriculturally rich valleys in America —  beyond greens, it is also known as the “Flower Basket of America,” because the climate and long growing season are perfect for the traditional flower industry. This moderate, warm climate is also what attracts cannabis growers from all over the coast to this abundant valley.

California asks major insurance carriers to cover cannabis industry

Much like how big banks have kept their distance from cannabis, large insurance carriers have generally stayed away from the industry even as states across the US continue to launch legal, regulated markets for patients and consumers.

California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones wants to change that.

Jones, a former state lawmaker and Sacramento City Council member, will be holding a series of meetings aimed at educating major insurers and convincing them to begin insuring the industry.
